The recent version of Henley’s Passport Index revealed that India’s passport climbed up several ranks, granting visa-free access to 62 countries. Keep reading to find out all you need to know.

About Henley’s Passport Index

Established 20 years ago in 2005, Henley’s Passport Index is a passport guidance index. It ranks 199 countries on the basis of travel freedom they offer. The index is generally reflective of a country’s overall geopolitical standing. It also gives the highly ranked countries a business & tourism boost.

Rankings Shake-Up: Who’s Affected?

The most recent version of Henley’s Passport Index showed some surprising findings. First-world countries like the US and UK, often considered to be superpowers, have both declined in the rankings.

In contrast, several Asian countries like India, South Korea, Japan, and Singapore improved their ranking.  India’s new ranking is now 77th, out of 199.

Benefits for Indian Travellers

The improved ranking of India’s passport suggests that Indians can now travel visa-free to 62 countries, including popular destinations such as Nepal, Fiji, Malaysia, Thailand, and Seychelles.

It will also lead to more cultural exchanges and networking opportunities. Both these things will be better for India’s long-term global standing.
