About 6 crore youngsters would benefit from the Unique Identification Authority of India's (UIDAI) decision to remove all payments for children aged 5 to 17 who need to update their Aadhaar biometrics. The waiver, which will take effect on October 1, 2025, and last for a year, guarantees that fingerprint, iris, and photo updates—which were previously priced at ₹125 for children ages 7 to 15—will now be free.

According to a statement released on Saturday, the Unique Identification Authority of India has eliminated all fees associated with children's required biometric Aadhaar updates.

On October 1, UIDAI waived all charges for the Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU-1) for one year, benefiting about 6 crore children.

When a child under five years old enrolls in Aadhaar, they must submit their birth certificate, address, date of birth, gender, and photo.

Children under the age of five do not have their fingerprints or iris biometrics taken for Aadhaar enrollment because they are not yet developed enough.

According to current regulations, children's fingerprints, iris, and photo must be updated on their Aadhaar once they turn five, and a second update must be completed between the ages of fifteen and seventeen.

Children aged 5 to 7 and those aged 15 to 17 are eligible for these upgrades without charge. A cost of Rs 125 per MBU is then assessed.

"With this decision, MBU is now effectively free for all children in the age group of 5-17," added the announcement.
