For the first time in Indian banking history, private-sector professionals can now apply for top leadership roles in public-sector banks (PSBs), including the highly prestigious Managing Director (MD) position at the State Bank of India (SBI).

The way public financial institutions fill top positions like MDs, CEOs, and Whole-Time Directors (WTDs) has changed significantly as a result of this transition. The action is a component of a broader government reform that aims to introduce new talent and experience to India's public banking industry by making the selection process more open, competitive, and merit-based.

For the first time, the Indian government has permitted experts from the private sector to apply for senior leadership positions in state-owned insurers and public-sector banks (PSBs), including the esteemed Managing Director (MD) position at SBI.

New standards for choosing Chairpersons, CEOs, MDs, and Whole-Time Directors (WTDs) have been approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). According to these regulations, qualified applicants must have at least 21 years of experience, with at least 15 of those years spent in banking and senior leadership roles, including two years on a board or three years just below.

Independent human resources organizations can now be appointed by the Financial Services Institutions Bureau (FSIB) to evaluate applications from the private sector. In a notable move toward a more contemporary, merit-based selection procedure, the government eliminated the requirement for Annual Performance Appraisal Reports (APARs).
