The WHO recently issued a health alert for 3 contaminated oral liquid medicines in India. Keep reading to find out more.
WHO’s Findings
The WHO has issued a Medical Product Alert for three oral liquid medicines manufactured in India. These goods were discovered to include diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol (EG), industrial solvents that are harmful to humans and have no place in pharmaceutical formulations.
Contaminated drugs include:
COLDRIF (produced by Sresan Pharmaceuticals).
Respifresh TR (from Rednex Pharmaceuticals)
ReLife (produced by Shape Pharma)
Health Risks & Symptoms
Exposure to diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol can cause rapid renal disease, brain impairment, and, in severe circumstances, death. These substances are especially dangerous for youngsters, who are more susceptible to toxic effects due to their lighter body weight and developing organs.
Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and acute renal failure.
Public Safety Measures
WHO recommends that authorities, healthcare professionals, and the public should adhere to the following safety measures:
Contact your local health authorities if you experience any ill effects or suspect contamination.
Ensure product authenticity and origin, particularly for paediatric medications.
Increase monitoring and testing of oral liquid medications in circulation.
