Flash floods caused by heavy rains struck the Kheer Ganga river on Tuesday afternoon, August 5, 2025, killing at least four people and threatening to wash away dozens more in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district.


In Dharali town, which is 8,600 feet above sea level, the floods destroyed hotels and residential structures. Residents captured film of the area's massive water waves rushing through it, engulfing everything in their path, including people and houses.


Heavy rains have triggered flash floods in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, with rescue operations underway in Dharali to locate missing or trapped people. 


Multiple agencies, including the Indian Army, ITBP, SDRF, NDRF, and local villagers, are working together and have rescued 130 people so far. 


Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is on the ground overseeing the high-intensity operations, while the IMD has issued heavy rainfall warnings for the state’s hill districts.

Continuous rainfall has pushed the Ganga’s water level in Haridwar close to the danger mark, Irrigation Department official Vikas Tyagi said. The IMD has issued a state-wide alert, with rain affecting 11 districts. Yesterday, the river level was around 293 (warning level) and has now risen near the danger mark, though it hasn’t crossed it yet.
