Overview: Supreme Court’s Ruling About Stray Dogs

The Supreme Court recently ordered that all stray dogs from the streets of Delhi NCR should be moved into animal rescue shelters. It also ordered the Delhi government, the  MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi), and the NDMC (New Delhi Municipal Council) to set up shelters for 5,000 stray dogs within 8 weeks.

The original rule was only for the city of Delhi, but after lawyers pointed out that the stray dog bites issue is also in Gurgaon, Noida, Faridabad & Ghaziabad, it became applicable to the entire NCR.

Public Reaction to the Ruling

Public reaction to the Supreme Court’s ruling about stray dogs has been divisive. RWAs (Resident Welfare Associations) have welcomed the order. Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta and mayor Iqbal Singh both expressed their support.

On the other hand, politicians such as INC’s Maneka Gandhi and TMC’s Saket Gokhale have opposed the order, with the former declaring that the Supreme Court has made an ‘‘angry judgement.’’ PETA India slammed the ruling by calling it ‘‘impractical, illegal, and inhumane.’’

Logic behind the Ruling

The Supreme Court responded in response to an increase in dog bites and rabies mortality in Delhi-NCR. It described the situation as "extremely grim" and prioritised public safety over sentiment. The main goal of this ruling is to make the streets of Delhi NCR safer.
