In a gutsy move, the Lok Sabha recently cleared a landmark bill that outlaws real money gaming in India. Keep reading to find out details of the bill, its major implications and more. 


Highlights of the Bill 

The bill, officially called ‘The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025’ has put a stop to all forms of real money gaming. While banks and other financial institutions have been instructed to not process transactions involving real money gaming.


Any person who is caught participating in such games will face strict punishments. As per the bill, an Online Gaming Authority will be set up for regulatory & compliance purposes. 


Centre’s Logic for the Ban 

The government claims the ban is necessary to combat increased addiction, financial loss, and suicides associated with online money games. Platforms frequently employ manipulative algorithms, which promote compulsive gaming, particularly among kids.


Speaking in Parliament, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that “Many people get addicted, lifetime savings evaporate in games, and with the algorithms in use, there may be untold levels of fraud and cheating,”

The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 has major implications which include: 

 

  • Industry Disruption: Real-money gaming platforms such as Dream11, MPL, and online poker applications may face legal ramifications or closure.


  • Advertising Restrictions: Promotions featuring celebrities, influencers, or sports teams may be prohibited.


  • Financial Blockades: Banks and payment gateways are not allowed to execute real-money game transactions.


  • Investor Concerns: Regulatory uncertainty may reduce venture capital and foreign investment in gaming.


  • User Impact: Millions who earn through fantasy sports or card games could lose that income stream.
